The battery rebate, explained without the countdown clock.
Plenty of solar ads use this rebate as a pressure tactic. Here's what it actually is, in plain English, so you can make the call in your own time.
What it is
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a federal government scheme that takes a meaningful chunk off the upfront cost of installing a home battery, for eligible systems from 5 kWh up to 100 kWh.
It works like the long-running solar panel incentive: the discount is delivered as an upfront price reduction through your installer. You don't apply for anything. Get a battery through Sunsave and the discount is already built into your quote — itemised as its own line, so you can see exactly what it's worth on your system.
The honest caveats
- The discount isn't a flat percentage, whatever the ads say. Since May 2026 it's tiered by battery size: the first ~14 kWh of usable capacity earns the full rate, capacity beyond that earns progressively less, and nothing above 50 kWh of usable capacity attracts any discount at all. Two batteries can get very different effective discounts — which is why we put the exact dollar figure in writing in your quote instead of a percentage on a website.
- The rate steps down over time as battery prices fall. That's a real reason not to wait years — it is not a reason to sign something this week. Anyone using it as a this-week deadline is selling, not advising.
- The tiering changes the sizing maths. Since the rebate is front-loaded onto the first ~14 kWh, oversizing a battery "because rebate" is now an even worse deal than it used to be. Honest sizing matters more, not less.
- A rebate doesn't make a battery right for your home. A discounted battery that's wrong for your usage is still the wrong battery. We do the sums on your actual bills first — and if the honest answer is "panels first" or "not yet", that's what we'll tell you.
